COUNSELLING FOR SURVIVORS AND FAMILIES

Our Therapy Programmes support people who have experienced the trauma of childhood sexual abuse.

If you are considering therapy for trauma related to an experience of child sexual abuse, welcome. You are in the right place. We understand it can be daunting to think about opening up such a deeply personal and painful issue. We are here to help.

We have a number of therapy options depending on your needs. The first step is lifting the phone. Ann Marie, our receptionist will guide you from there.

The main principles underpinning our therapy programme are:

  • Collaboration | We learn a lot from our clients, helping us deliver a therapeutic approach tailored to your needs.
  • Evidence-informed practice | Ensuring clients’ safety and improving the outcomes of therapy.
  • Depth psychotherapy | Looking beyond managing symptoms and addressing the core trauma caused by abuse.
  • Responsive Therapy |Highly individualised to you and evolving as you present moment-to-moment in each session.

Initial Meeting

The journey begins with an initial meeting, which we aim to offer within six weeks of you contacting us. This involves us gathering some general information about you in order to be certain that we are the appropriate service for you. It is also an opportunity for you to ask us questions. Unfortunately, we currently have a relatively long waiting list to start therapy. However, once you are on the waiting list you can avail of support from our waiting list case manager. We also offer a ‘resourcing and managing symptoms group’, intermittently, to those on the waiting list.

Individual counselling

Everybody is different but most people spend the bulk of their time with us in one-to-one therapy, either in-office or via an online platform. This therapy will be trauma-informed and attend to your whole person as you present for each session. Your therapist will explore your therapeutic goals and support you to work towards reducing the symptoms that intrude on your life. Your therapist will help you to reflect on your experiences and gain insight into them, thus supporting you to recover.

Group counselling

Some people who have done a significant amount of trauma therapy, either with us or elsewhere, opt to participate in our 20-week therapy group. Here, you will be supported to explore the impact of trauma on your life including relationships, family, disclosure and current day-to-day life. While this group is facilitated by two therapists, most participants tell us that it was being with and learning from others who had walked in their shoes that was especially helpful and meaningful.

Family support

We understand that the impact of sexual violence goes beyond the person who has experienced the abuse. We can offer family members the tools and support to help them help the survivor in your family. This is carried out in group sessions with other families.
