Prevention Programme
Providing therapeutic support to reduce the risk of further harm.
About the Programme
One in Four’s prevention programme is a therapeutic intervention for people who have committed a sexual offence against a child. It helps individuals understand their behaviour, take responsibility, and reduce the risk of further offending. The programme is a core part of our child protection strategy.
Who Is the Programme For?
The programme is for adults who have sexually abused a child, online or through contact. We work with people with and without convictions, at any stage of the criminal justice process, as well as those who may never face charges, provided they meet our suitability criteria.
How the Programme Works
Engagement starts with a risk assessment to ensure the person is suitable and willing to participate. People usually begin with one‑to‑one therapy before progressing to group work. Therapy looks at triggers, motivations, and the role the offending behaviour played, while developing appropriate coping mechanisms.
We provide both a long‑term Prevention Group and a dedicated Child Sexual Exploitation Material (CSEM) group, working in partnership with An Garda Síochána, Tusla, and the Probation Service. The safety of survivors and those who may be at risk is central throughout.
Outcomes
Research shows that structured therapeutic programmes can reduce the likelihood of reoffending. One in Four’s programme is reviewed on an ongoing basis and contributes to national and international learning on preventing further sexual harm. This work supports safer outcomes to protect children and the wider community.
